What is a Ketogenic Diet?
What is a Ketogenic Diet? You might have come across people who believe keto diet to be a high fat, protein module. In fact, many view it as an unhealthy plan and exaggerate the count of calories and fats in this diet. However, this is a misconception. A keto diet is actually a low carbohydrate diet (and in some cases a no carb diet) with high fat food and plenty intake of water.

Why do we have more of high fat foods for Keto Diet?

This is the most common question that anyone following this diet has on their mind. To put it in simple words, increasing the amount of fat brings your physical structure into a metabolic state – ketosis. And as the metabolism is boosted, the capability of your body to metabolize and burn fat also increases. Moreover, this fat turns into ketones in your liver which is then utilized by muscles and tissues as fuel for the body. The keto diet is designed keeping in mind that not too much of ketones should get stored in the body, putting you at health risks.

Who all can go for it?

  •  Those with stubborn belly fat – This seems to have become a common problem among majority of people mainly due to the sedentary lifestyle everyone lives, nowadays. Besides, women who go through cesarean deliveries also develop fat bellies.  However, it’s easy to lose belly fat fast with keto diet.

  •   Those with High Blood Pressure – The    inclusion of MCT oils in keto diet makes it a     healthy plan for individuals with high BP as they help to maintain optimum blood pressure. However, for such patients we do exclude some food items (specifically the salty ones) from the diet.
  • Those with High Cholesterol Levels – First of all, it’s necessary to understand that there are two types of cholesterols = the good (HDL) and the bad (LDL).  The LDL (Low Density Lipoproteins) increases the risk of cardio attacks, badly affecting the overall health of your heart while HDL (High Density Lipoproteins) protects your heart by replacing other forms of cholesterol from your blood. And, keto diet which is high in healthy fat and protein actually boosts the level of this good cholesterol in your body.

Who all MUSTN’T follow this diet?

Even though this most effective weight loss diet has many benefits, it’s not recommended for everyone. This is why the medical history of the people is taken into consideration before they are suggested to go on with it. Patients with

–  kidney diseases

–  vitamin deficiencies

–  pancreatitis

–  low levels of amino acids like alanine and  carnitine

and those on renal diet are not suggested to settle on a ketogenic diet.
